Thursday, 17 December can be considered as a very dark day in Ikageng with two people that were stabbed and two shot dead in three separate incidents.

According to the spokesperson of the police in the North-West, Lt Col Amanda Funani, the first incident happened in the early hours of Thursday morning at Baralong View next to Extention 11 when a 35-year-old suspect was stabbed and killed by his 27-year-old cousin.

The two cousins were living together. When the suspect arrived home in the early hours he was under the influence of alcohol. An argument had ensued and the suspect stabbed his cousin in the neck with a knife. A murder case was opened and the suspect, Tsietsi Thebe, had already appeared in the Potchefstroom Magistrate Court on Friday, 18 December.

In the second incident on the same day, a 34-year-old victim was stabbed in the chest by a known suspect at 14:00 at the Promosa dumping site. According to Lt Col Funani the suspect and deceased first argued. When onlookers saw what happened they contacted the police. The suspect fled the scene and is still at large.

Lt Col Funani also confirmed that a third tragic incident occurred where a 36-year-old man, a sergeant in the police, shot his girlfriend (30) and then allegedly shot himself. The incident happened at Extension 8 in front of their daughter and another family member who fled the scene.

“According to allegations the neighbour, who is also the suspect’s friend, heard the policeman and his girlfriend argue at 18:00 and then heard gunshots. The friend and other neighbours went to check what had happened and found the suspect and the girlfriend on the floor. They phoned the police and both deceased were transported to the mortuary”, Funani said.
