To do their part in ensuring there was no looting in Ventersdorp, the Ventersdorp Taxi Association organised a three-hour taxi convoy on Thursday, (15 July).
The purpose of the convoy was to inform the community that the taxi drivers did not support the looting. “We are joining hands together to protect our town,” Smanga Biyana, the chairperson of the Ventersdorp Taxi Association, said.
“
We wanted to ensure that everything ran smoothly and remained under control.” He noted that, although Ventersdorp was not affected by looting and violence, their business was. “When the looting started, our business slowed down significantly. People were scared of travelling to Klerksdorp and Potchefstroom for their usual shopping because they were uncertain if the shops were open,” he explained.
Smanga and the taxi association took it upon themselves to ensure the safety of their community. Many local business owners appreciated the taxi association’s efforts to protect the community immensely.
“It is really comforting to see that the taxi community is standing together to protect us in these difficult times. If we don’t work together, there won’t be any businesses and we’d be divided as a community,” one of the business owners shared. “We are grateful to the taxi association and are behind them all the way,” another concluded.
