Illegal dumping and littering is still an ongoing problem in the country. With the lockdown and essential workers testing positive for Covid-19, many municipalities around the country have experi- enced a backlog in their efforts to remove waste. Illegal dumping sites have become an increasing issue.
The resident, who has been living in the street for over a year, says she and her neighbours have reported the issue, but nothing has been done about it. “If they could just remove the rubbish and prevent people from littering there,” she complained.
According to the resident, the site is a breeding ground for mosquitoes, rodents and cockroaches. “A lot of the dumping is caused by people passing by or households where one dustbin is not enough. It gets filled up quickly and they have to remove the rubbish from their yards,” she explained.
The ongoing issue is of great concern to the residents who are forced to bear the stench of the refuse and unhygienic conditions daily. “It is high time that the municipality fines people. We can’t continue living like this,” she concluded.
The Herald asked the municipality for comment but none was forthcoming by the time of going to print.
