NPO brings a moment of sunshine

On Monday (19 July), a non-profit organisation (NPO) changed a few lives by donating clothing to those in need at the International Assemblies of God (IAG) church in Sarafina, Ikageng.
Although many were given a ray of sunshine, the moment was bittersweet because many children left empty-handed, “Handing the clothing over was so heartbreaking. We were short of clothes to give, especially for boys aged between two and eight years old,” said the founder of the NPO, Minky Motaung(52).
Coming from a disadvantaged background herself, Minky has always felt the need to give back to those in need. When her daughter, Princess, was born disabled, it was a sign that she also needed to make room for those with disabilities.
Last year, Minky founded Rekatleho SA Footprints, an NPO aimed at uplifting the community and fighting for victims of GVB, especially women, the elderly and people living with disabilities (PLWD). “The organisation has specifically chosen to fight for these groups because they are often ignored
and overlooked,” she explained.
With the help of Kristel Fourie, Thabile Mthombeni and Sizwile Khoza, who all donated clothing, the NPO made their first donation since being founded last year.” It wouldn’t have been possible without them,” Minky said.
“For the past few months, we have been educating our communities about important topics. We have always wanted to hand out goods physically but never had the means to do so. Covid made things even more difficult,” she added.
Minky says the NPO is fired up and looking forward to doing more since it handed out the clothing on Monday. “Seeing that many boys left without anything, we are busy organising another day, soon, where we can donate clothes to them as well. Our greatest challenge at the moment is funding,” she said. “I am unemployed myself, so I make do with the little I have and the help of good Samaritans,” she added.
Minky’s greatest hope for the foundation is to one day have a safe house for those who need food and a temporary place of safety. But, for now, the foundation aims to take it one day at a time.
“I learnt the hard way that beggars can’t be choosers, so we accept any form of a donation to help those in need,” she concluded. To donate or get more information about this initiative, contact Minky on 082 257 9803 or Tumelo Moloi on 082 080 2943.
