Scorpion Community Safety donates to the needy

Over the weekend of 24 July, Scorpion Community Safety helped feed those in need in Marikana, Promosa.

Over the weekend of 24 July, Scorpion Community Safety helped feed those in need in Marikana, Promosa. Since the organisation has only been operating for about a month, many people in the community are unaware that there is a new sheriff in town, to whom they can go if they need help.

“We wanted to create awareness around Scorpion Community Safety by letting the community know we are here for them whenever they need solutions to their problems,” Steve Williams, one of the committee members explained.

Steve said they specifically chose Marikana due to the high rate of crimes in that area. One of the issues the organisation tackles is gender-based violence (GBV).

“Many people in our community continue to suffer in silence. We try and reassure them that we are here for men and women who may be victims of GBV,” he added.

The organisation asks the community not to hesitate to report any crime as they are just a phone call away. Steve said safety organisations often ask the community for help when gathering information to solve crimes but seldom give back. “Many people in our communities do not have food. To give back in the smallest way we could, we arranged to provide a decent meal for approximately 150 people,” he said.

Steve said the event was a huge success, with the highlight being able to connect with the community. Scorpion Community Safety looks forward to assisting the community of Potchefstroom in the best way and will continue to host events where they give back.

“Thank you to all those who contributed to this great event, it will certainly not be the last. May the Almighty grant us the opportunity to do more than just crime prevention. Let’s liberate the minds of our youth and develop a safe, clean environment,” the organisation said.

“We also wish to extend a big thank you to the community radio station. Because they broadcast the event as it was happening, the people came out in their numbers,” they concluded.
