Illegal dumping sites continue to be a problem in Potchefstroom. Karabo Ramatlapeng (36), who lives on the corner of ZCC and Mandela in Sarafina Street, is one person in particular who says she can no longer stand the disgusting site in her area.

Karabo, who has been living in Ikageng for over two years, says something needs to be done about the growing issue.

“I can no longer deal with the unhygienic living conditions that are caused by people who disregard the wellbeing of others,” she lamented. “It completely baffles me that people just dump their rubbish anywhere they see fit.”

Karabo says she is especially annoyed because people that add to these illegal dumping sites know exactly what they are doing. “What irritates me even further is the lack of support we have from the municipality.

They know my name by now, but the only answer I ever get is that they will come and clean it up. Karabo says she saw someone dumping a heap of waste just days earlier, adding to the unhealthy situation. “Why are we, as people, so filthy and irresponsible?” she asked.
The Herald asked the municipality for comment but had received nothing by the time of going to print.
