Learners suffer due to continuous floods at school

Since schools reopened on Wednesday, 12 January 2022, learners of Seiphemelo Secondary, Ikageng,  haven't had a great start to the academic year.

When schools reopened on Wednesday, 12 January 2022, learners of Seiphemelo Secondary, Ikageng,  haven’t had a great start to the academic year.

Following the heavy rains, classrooms at the school continue to be flooded. According to Estelle Esterhuysen, a teacher at the school, Seiphemelo is situated next to a hill causing all the rainwater to run towards the school.

“We need help, it becomes extremely difficult to teach learners under these circumstances,” Estelle said.  Estelle adds that yesterday (17 January ) the matrics were forced to have class on the school’s verandah. “ It’s extremely unfair to these learners,” she lamented.

“ We have tried contacting the councillor to possibly open up the sewages but we are failing to get help,” she added.

Estelle emphasizes that the school needs help from the municipality to help reroute the water to pass past the school and not through it. “ Every morning the workers at the school spend hours trying to get the water out of the classrooms only for it to be the same story the next day,” she said.

The Herald asked the municipality for comment but none was forthcoming in time of the article.
