Residents retaliate after failure to meet service delivery demands

It has been weeks since residents of Promosa embarked on a strike where they were demanding better services from the municipality.

Almost a month ago (14 July) residents of Promosa embarked on protest action to demand better service delivery from the municipality.

This morning, 10 August, the residents decided to shut down the community by engaging in yet another strike regarding basic services. According to DA councillor, Glenville Fransman, the protest is a continuation of the previous one that happened weeks ago. “ Apparently the Mayor made promises and didn’t revert back to the residents,” Fransman said.

“Residents have now threatened to continue with the protest and are apparently aiming to target councillors as well,” he added.

Police spokesperson Adele Myburgh confirmed that a strike has ensued and that police are currently on the scene. ”The protestors have blocked the Promosa road as well as the road in Dassierand that leads to Promosa,” she said.

On 14 July, the Democratic Alliance in JB Marks released a press statement in which they condemned the violence and destruction of property in Promosa following the alleged retaliation against the efforts by the Scorpion community safety group to prevent criminality by torching the vehicle belonging to a leader of the group.

During that time, Fransman added that some residents were without electricity because of the protests and that this makes it difficult for municipal officials to enter Promosa and attend to the electricity problems in the area. “If the JB Marks Municipality did its job to ensure that action is taken against people who illegally connect electricity points to the grid to steal electricity, these violent protests could have been avoided,” Fransman said during the strike that occurred last month.
