Temporary road closures ahead due to sewer line upgrades

The first of four road closures will be at Louis le Grange Street from August 24-27.

Residents and motorists in Potchefstroom will need to take note of a series of temporary road closures linked to the ongoing upgrading of the Promosa and Poortjiedam Bulk Sewer Line project in the next three months.

The first road closure will be at Louis le Grange Street from August 24-27.

According to the JB Marks Local Municipality spokesperson, Jeanette Tshite, the closures are necessary to allow construction work to take place safely, with several existing services running alongside the affected roads. These include electrical cables, water and sewer pipelines and stormwater infrastructure.

Piet Bosman Street and Louis le Grange Street that will be closed for a short while

“Excavation work could damage these services, as well as pose a safety risk to pedestrians and motorists. Full road closures have therefore been identified as the safest option during construction.”

The affected roads and closure dates are:

  • Louis Le Grange Street: August 24-27
  • Piet Bosman Street: September 7-11
  • Hoffman Street: September 28 to October 7
  • Peter Mokaba Street: October 12-21

Traffic will be diverted during each closure.

Motorists travelling on Louis Le Grange Street will be diverted via Jeppe Street and Fontein Street, while Piet Bosman Street traffic will be diverted via Retief Street and Dwars Street.

During the Hoffman Street closure, motorists will be diverted via Maree Street and the R53. Traffic affected by the Peter Mokaba Street closure will be diverted via Spruit Street and the R53.

The municipality says barricades, warning signs and directional signage will be installed in accordance with the South African Road Traffic Signs Manual. Trained flag personnel will also be stationed at key points during peak traffic periods.

“Dust-suppression measures, including the use of water trucks, will also be implemented to limit dust and minimise the impact on surrounding residents and motorists,” adds Tshite.

The municipality has urges residents and motorists to plan their journeys in advance, obey temporary traffic signs and follow the instructions of traffic-control personnel.

JB Marks Municipality apologises for the inconvenience and thanks residents for their patience and cooperation while the essential sewer infrastructure upgrades are carried out.
