An assessment of the recurring sewage spill in Mohadin, next to the Clinic and Sports Ground, was conducted by the Executive Mayor Gaba Ka Qhele, accompanied by the MMC for Technical Services and the MMC for Community Services on Tuesday, 24 January.
For over three years, the Mohadin stadium has not been used due to ever-worsening sewage which has been blocking the only entrance.
A concerned resident, who asked to remain anonymous, said she spent time over the years pleading with the municipality to remove the sewage in order for the sports grounds to be used for recreational purposes. However, none of her complaints were taken seriously.
In a previous article, the acting municipal communication manager, Jeanette Tshite, said according to detailed outcomes of investigations conducted by the consultant, the existing sewer outfall is insufficient to carry the current sewerage due to population growth over the past years.
“The line is due for upgrading and from a project management perspective, the designs were completed. The project is awaiting approval of the Water Use Licence application from the Department of Water and Sanitation,” she said.
“After that, the municipality will procure a contractor to commence with the construction work. It is a major challenge to curb spillage during the rainy season due to storm water ingress,” she concluded.
“ I am extremely happy to see that there is some sort of movement and that soon our children will be able to finally make use of the stadium,” the resident added.
