A letter to the community: Have we become the lost generation

South Africa's Constitution is one of the most internationally acclaimed in the world.

South Africa’s Constitution is one of the most internationally acclaimed in the world. Unfortunately, the government we choose by the majority has failed dismally.

The corruption and energy crisis have a grave effect on unemployment, poverty and crime. Natural disasters and farm attacks also add to high poverty and the cost of living with the poor getting poorer every day.

The government doesn’t have a clear plan on how to address these issues; that’s why the people have lost all faith in our leaders, with depression and suicide on the rise. The youth has become hopeless about job opportunities and discrimination based on race, leading to them having no direction.

It’s sad to see there is still so much hate and racism in our country. As a country, we need to stop living in the past and look towards the future, living together in love, peace and harmony. As leaders or government officials, we must remember our oath of office and code of conduct: we pledge to serve our people and the community.

By failing to plan, you are preparing to fail. It’s clear that this country has become a gangster state, with whistleblowers and activists being killed, and the government has no plan to protect them. According to the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC), criminal justice systems often suffer from compartmentalisation and lack of integration of the different components of the criminal justice chain.

There is also a lack of coordination and collaboration with other sectors essential to ensuring integrated responses to crime and violence, as in the health, education, and social welfare sectors. People should be wary of leaders claiming to know God but practising evil deeds behind closed doors or in the middle of the night.

“My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge: because thou hast rejected knowledge, I will also reject thee, that thou shalt be no priest to me: seeing thou hast forgotten the law of thy God, I will also for-get thy children. Hosea 4:6.
