Recycled spectacle-project puts the focus on the importance of sight

Members of the community can donate their unused or old spectacles and sunglasses to give someone else the gift of sight.

Schools all across Potchefstroom are sharpening their focus with the Lions Club Potchefstroom’s Recycle For Sight campaign.

This campaign aims to give the gift of sight back to the community with old frames and spectacles being recycled to create new eyeglasses for children and adults who are in need.

Schools such as Laerskool President Pretorius, Laerskool M.L. Fick, Potchefstroom Central School, Potchefstroom Primary and others are being used as collection points for these old glasses.

Members of the community can donate their unused or old spectacles and sunglasses to give someone else the gift of sight. Recycled frames are used in the Lions Brightsight programme across the country.

According to Pieter Marais of UNIPROP Real Estate, this project can make a huge difference in a child’s ability to perform in school.

“A lot of kids don’t have spectacles or cannot afford top of the range eye care. With these recycled glasses they have a chance to enhance their sight. I want to give a big thanks to all the school for their support with this initiative,” he added.

Worldwide it is estimated that more than 120 million persons are visually impaired because of uncorrected refractive errors (far and near sightedness). Almost all cases can be corrected and normal vision can be restored with eyeglasses, contact lenses or refractive surgery. The lack of eyeglasses denies children and adults opportunities for education, employment and generally a better quality of life.
