Jonkers fly SA flag high at World Gliding Champs Down Under

Potchefstroom’s own Uys Jonker and his son, Phillip flew the South African flag high at the 37th FAI World Gliding Championships in Narromine, Australia.

Potchefstroom’s own Uys Jonker and his son, Phillip flew the South African flag high at the 37th FAI World Gliding Championships in Narromine, Australia.

The championship took place from 3 to 15 December, with Uys Jonker in his JS3 glider achieving fantastic results in the 15 m class. He ultimately ended in sixth position overall out of 27 other competitors in the class.

Uys won the races on day 4 and day 5 and crept up to first overall after seven races. He occupied 4th position overall at the end of the penultimate day on 8,171 points, just behind Steffan Goettler of Germany on 8,197 points.

Phillip also showed his talent in the standard class; he was in fifth place after 10 tasks, with a total of 7,551 points. He also achieved two second places. He ultimately ended fifth on 8467 points.
