College celebrates 120 years of excellence
Potch Boys High marks its 120th anniversary with a proud look at its rich history, iconic alumni, and a forward-looking vision to prepare young men as leaders in all spheres of life.
As Potchefstroom High School for Boys celebrates its 120th anniversary this year, Principal Mrs Liané van der Merwe reflects on a legacy steeped in tradition, growth, and resilience.
Founded in 1905 as Potchefstroom College and one of the original Milner Schools, the institution has stood as a beacon of excellence for more than a century.
Van der Merwe, who has served as principal since October 2022, says it’s a moment of pride to honour the legacy of those who came before them and to celebrate the enduring spirit of Potch Boys High.
For the school community, the anniversary represents more than just a passage of time. It’s a reminder of shared values and a commitment to unity and excellence.
“It reminds us that we are part of something greater than ourselves, a brotherhood that spans generations,” added van der Merwe.
From its Cape Dutch architecture to its modern facilities, the school has evolved while staying true to its core values.
“We’ve weathered wars, social changes, and educational reforms, yet we’ve remained steadfast in our mission to develop well-rounded young men.”
The school’s motto, Iustorum Semita Lux Splendens, which means “The path of the righteous is a shining light”, continues to guide its path.
The school also boasts an impressive list of alumni, including Paul Sinton-Hewitt, founder of Parkrun, Olympic silver medalist Hezekiél Sepeng, international footballer Keagan Dolly, Springbok rugby player Jeremy Nel, TV personality Katlego Maboe, and billionaire philanthropist Nathan Kirsh.
According to van der Merwe, the school offers more than education, it provides a sense of belonging, a true home away from home.
Looking ahead, van der Merwe hopes to further expand academic offerings and strengthen community partnerships. “My vision is to continue nurturing young men into confident, compassionate, and capable leaders. I want Potch Boys High to remain the school of choice for boys seeking excellence in all spheres of life.”
She sees the anniversary not just as a celebration, but as a rallying point for the school community. “It invites us to reflect, reconnect, and recommit to the values that define us. I encourage the public, to engage with the school, support our initiatives, and help us shape the next chapter of our legacy.”
