Beloved Royal Chef passes on

Lucky Khumbi, The Royal Chef, loved being in the kitchen preparing tasty meals for the community. The former convict turned his life around to pursue his culinary dreams.

Lucky Khumbi (46), a well-known chef in the Ikageng and Potchefstroom community, has passed away from illness this past Monday, 2 February.

Lucky was affectionately known as The Royal Chef, and also started his own Royal Chef catering company.

Lucky had an inspirational story of redemption from being arrested and jailed for housebreaking to honing his cooking skills in prison. He was sentenced to 11 years, but through good behaviour (working in the prison kitchen) he got released earlier to pursue his dream.

Stepping out of the prison he soon found his home behind the stove where his passion for cooking motivated and inspired the community he served. Lucky also enjoyed giving back to the community through testimonies and inspiring talks.

The Ikageng community was in shock at the news of his passing that was posted on the social media group “I grew up in Ikageng.”

Numerous members wrote messages of condolences with over 305 comments paying respect to Lucky.

Lucky’s memorial service and burial will take place on Saturday, 7 February at 3664 Kopane Street, Ikageng from 07:00-09:00.
