Potholes still a persistent eyesore in Potch
Potchefstroom have been dubbed by some residents as "Potholestroom" due to the increasing amount of potholes on major routes and streets in neighbourhoods.
This summer, numerous potholes have popped up on Potchefstroom roads, or in most cases has enlarged due to rain or wear and tear from heavy traffic.
Potholes that engulf the road in the busy intersection at the corner of Du Plooy and OR Tambo Streets have become not only an eyesore, but also a traffic risk for motorists.
Numerous potholes are stretched across the road, making it difficult for motorists to stay in one lane. It can also create a problem for motorists at night, as lack of functioning street light adds another layer to the dilemma.
Roads in various parts of Potch are in an increasingly bad shape
JB Marks Municipal spokesperson, Jeanette Tshite, has stated last month that this intersection at Du Plooy and OR Tambo streets form part of JB Marks Local Municipality’s Pothole Maintenance Programme and “will be addressed in line with the approved schedule.”
Since then, the road has not yet been fixed with potholes still visible.
Potholes are also clearly visible in various neighbourhoods and wards across Potchefstroom with no one being able to avoid dodging a pothole on their daily commute.
Tshite states that the Municipality acknowledges the inconvenience experienced by road users, noting that recent heavy rainfall has accelerated road surface deterioration and resulted in a backlog of repairs.
“Technical teams continue to assess and prioritize affected roads based on safety, traffic volumes, and the severity of damage,” she explained.
