The North-West University campus amphi was transformed into a live gallery of colour, conversation and collaboration as students gathered for Canvas 2026 on February 20 – 21. This flagship student-led arts event celebrated creative expression and unity.

Hosted as a dynamic live-art experience, Canvas 2026 brought together students, members of the Student Campus Council (SCC), and representatives from various campus offices. While SCC members attended as special guests, student organisations and campus departments took centre stage in a friendly creative showcase that highlighted both individual talent and collective teamwork.

Under this year’s theme, “Tradition vs Tomorrow,” participants were challenged to explore the relationship between heritage and progress. Working against the clock, teams produced live paintings that reflected diverse interpretations of cultural identity, institutional legacy and innovation within the evolving student community.

From bold symbols of tradition to futuristic imagery envisioning the campus of tomorrow, the artworks sparked meaningful engagement among spectators and participants alike. The set timeframe added energy to the atmosphere, as brushes moved swiftly and ideas took shape in real time.

SCC Arts and Culture Officer, Zinhle Magongo, said the event aimed to create more than just visual impact.

“Canvas 2026 is about giving students a voice through art. The theme ‘Tradition vs Tomorrow’ encouraged participants to reflect on where we come from and where we are going as a campus community. It’s inspiring to see how creativity can open dialogue and bring people together.”

Beyond the competitive element, the event underscored the role of the arts in fostering connection and reflection on campus. By inviting student organisations and campus offices to collaborate in a shared creative space, Canvas 2026 strengthened relationships across structures while celebrating the depth of talent within the student body.
