The Maperiperi Community came together on Sunday, August 9, to commemorate Women’s Day with a powerful message of unity, courage and hope for women affected by gender-based violence (GBV).

Held at Leader Lebo’s Place in Extension 11, Roma, the event provided a safe and respectful platform for women, particularly survivors of GBV, to share their experiences and reflect on the challenges they have faced on their journeys towards healing and moving forward.

The Women’s Day commemoration was held alongside the organisation’s general meeting, with the community standing in solidarity with survivors and victims of gender-based violence.

The event focused on honouring the strength and resilience of women while raising awareness about GBV and the devastating impact it continues to have on individuals, families and communities.

Survivors were given an opportunity to share powerful testimonies of courage and resilience, highlighting not only the realities of abuse but also the strength it takes to overcome it.

The Maperiperi community emphasised the importance of community support in helping survivors rebuild their lives and encouraged residents to stand together against all forms of violence.

The message was clear. No to GBV, and yes to respect, equality and safety for every woman.

The organisation believes that creating a safer community requires compassion, respect, unity and strength, with everyone playing a role in supporting those affected by gender-based violence.

“Together, we can build a community where every woman feels safe, respected, and valued,” was among the messages shared during the commemoration.

The event also served as a reminder that survivors’ voices matter and that sharing their stories can inspire hope in others who may still be facing abuse.

The Maperiperi community called on residents to continue standing together against GBV and to work towards a community where women and girls can live free from fear and violence.
