Ikageng was also ranked seventh nationally in terms of assault GBH and 25th nationally in terms of sexual assault cases reported.

The highest reported occurrence of assault with the intent to do grievous bodily harm and sexual offences in the North West Province is in Ikageng.

This was revealed during the release of the latest SAPS crime stats for quarter four (January-March 2026) on June 9 in Mmabatho. Ikageng’s Police Station was also ranked seventh nationally in terms of assault and 25th nationally in terms of sexual assault cases reported.

Ikageng was also first in the provincial rankings for residential burglaries, with Rustenburg and Mmabatho in second and third place. Although Ikageng is ranked second in the province for the incidence of contact crimes, the rate has decreased by 13.5%.

Potchefstroom was ranked fourth in terms of theft out of motor vehicles in the province.

There have also been 65 more counts for driving under the influence in 2025-2026 than the previous year in the Dr. Kenneth Kaunda District.

Focus to intensify investigation contact crime and gender-based violence

Wessels Morweng, the NW MEC for the Department of Community Safety and Transport Management, as well as the SAPS Acting Provincial Commissioner of North West, Major General Ryno Naidoo, were in attendance during a media briefing held in Mmabatho.

“Our focus remains on ensuring we continue to intensify investigation of contact crime and all aspects of gender-based violence and femicide. All these are in alignment with the government’s priorities of focusing on the reduction of contact crimes, including crimes against women and children,” stated Wessels Morweng, the NW MEC for the Department of Community Safety and Transport Management.

The province has, for the period under review, recorded 271 murders, representing an increase of 18.3%, while attempted murder increased by 17.4% from January to March 2026. There has been an increase of 3% in assaults with intent to cause grievous bodily harm.

“We will continue to build the capacity of Community Policing Forums and Community Safety Forums, while intensifying school safety interventions and social crime prevention programmes,” added Morweng.
