Fatherhood is about putting in the work
To Blessing Buthelezi, being a father is not just about being present in a child’s life, but also about being a good role model who leads by example.
As we celebrate Father’s Day, we are reminded of the important role that fathers play in children’s lives.
To Blessing Buthelezi, being a father is not just about being present in a child’s life, but also about being a good role model who leads by example. As someone juggling work and his studies, he tries to set a good example by always putting his best foot forward, in both his work and studies.
“I’ve always said that biologically any man can be a father, but it takes someone who’s willing to put in the work to be a dad,” says Blessing, who is a stepdad to one of his two sons, Tairiq.
Born and raised in Soweto and now residing in Potchefstroom, Blessing describes himself as an adaptable, objective, reliable and logical introvert who lives life in the present.
He enjoys spending time playing with his kids and watching movies or football with his family – this is what provides purpose and quality time.

Blessing believes that a father’s biggest role is to provide guidance, something which he admits is not easy, especially when he does not always have the answers. It is however important to be there for children when they need help and to be supportive even if children make choices their parents do not agree with as long as they are positive choices.
“I’ll admit it is a scary and sometimes surreal experience, because deep down I still feel that I myself am a child in need of a guiding hand, but I also feel a great sense of responsibility that I can’t afford to slack on”.
He added that seeing the gratitude his kids show him is what makes feel blessed as a parent and encourages him to keep doing his best.
