Activists march to police station with memorandum demanding justice

The Solidarity Action Committee Collective delivered a memorandum with demands regarding the ongoing investigation regarding the death of their former leader, Mokoena Letsie

One month after community activist, Mokoena Letsie’s tragic murder, the Solidarity Action Committee Collective organised a march to Wespol SAPS office in Potchefstroom yesterday (Friday, June 26)

The group delivered a memorandum with demands regarding the ongoing investigation and possible subsequent arrests during the next 14 days.

The march, which was peaceful, began at Ikageng Police Station in response to a perceived lack of arrests, with the group demanding justice for their fallen leader. Activists made poster depicting the fight for justice.

Mokoena Letsie was tragically gunned down in Ikageng on May 27, leaving the community in shock and seeking justice. Letsie was an activist who served as the chairperson of the Solidarity Action Committee Collective prior to his death. He has also been described as someone who fought for the betterment of his community.

Gift Mashaba, the current chairperson of the Solidarity Action Committee Collective spoke on Letsie’s contribution in the community.

“Comrade Mokoena Letsie was an activist, he was a father to the fatherless and a great person to our community. He was a community builder and organiser in fighting for decent housing, electricity, service delivery and the social rights of our community.”

Mashaba went on to describe Letsie as a prominent leader, who led with honour and trust.

The march was decided as a possibility not long after the incident, with the Solidarity Action Committee Collective deciding that if the case did not yield any arrests 30 days after the shooting, they would mobilise to put pressure on the police to work more diligently on solving the case.

North-West police spokesperson Col. Anne Magakoe, confirmed that the police received the memorandum from the Solidarity Action Committee Collective.
