Police crack down on crime hotspots in CBD
Police and the Department of Home Affairs conducted operations at identified crime hotspots within the Potchefstroom Central Business District.
A coordinated and unannounced police operation resulted in the apprehension of 21 irregular migrants in the Potchefstroom CBD on Wednesday, July 8.
Police arrested and charged the migrants with contravening the Immigration Act of 2002. This is part of the Operation Shanela 2 which focuses on the apprehension of irregular migrants, high-density patrols, and compliance inspections at second-hand goods dealers and liquor outlets.
A multidisciplinary team comprising the Potchefstroom Station Commander, Brig Phumelele Matamela, Provincial Anti-Gang Unit, Potchefstroom Crime Prevention Unit, Public Order Policing (POP), Provincial Corporate Communication and Liaison Services, and the Department of Home Affairs conducted operations at identified crime hotspots within the Potchefstroom Central Business District (CBD).

In addition, a 27-year-old man was arrested and charged for driving under the influence. He will appear before the Potchefstroom Magistrates’ Court on Friday, 10 July 2026.
The Acting Provincial Commissioner of the North West, Major General (Dr) Ryno Naidoo, commended the members and all stakeholders involved for their commitment and coordinated efforts.
“Operation Shanela 2 remains one of the key crime combatting initiatives aimed at preventing and addressing criminality through high police visibility and intelligence driven operations,” he stated.

He also emphasised that police will continue to work closely with other law enforcement partners to enforce the law without fear or favour, strengthen the authority of the State, and ensure that those who violate the Law are brought to justice. He requested communities to continue working with the police by reporting criminal activities.
