Grade 9 learner spends birthday feeding the less fortunate
Tairiq van Rooyen did not want the latest gadgets for his 15th birthday - he wanted to serve the less privileged.
Serving and giving to the less fortunate has always been part of Tairiq van Rooyen’s identity.
This Grade 9 learner at HTS Potchefstroom recently spent his birthday serving underprivileged people in his community with vetkoek and soup. Any other teenager would want a PlayStation or phone, but not Tairiq, who sees more value in helping others.
“My mom (Kaylene) and grandmother (Baby) always made my birthday a special day. After my grandmother passed, my mom still continued, so I wanted to share my special day with others. And giving to those who are less fortunate was the only thing that came to mind,” explains Tairiq.
The best part of the day for Tairiq was seeing the smiles on the people’s faces.
“Knowing that for that moment they could feel seen as just any other person. One small gesture, a helping hand, and any small thing you can do can brighten up someone’s day. You can have a positive impact on your community.”
Besides helping make his community a better place, he also has a massive love for soccer, which started at the age of 9, when his stepdad, Blessing, came into his life.
“He introduced me to my two favourite clubs, Kaizer Chiefs and Chelsea. The teams play with passion and give their best to entertain and bring hope to their fans.”
According to Tairiq, football also teaches him life lessons.
“Football teaches us hope, endurance, discipline, and the courage to go after your dreams.”
