Potch community works together in fight against hunger
The mall's tenants, volunteers and community members from various spheres joined in to pack 15 000 meal packets for underprivileged children.
Many hands made light work this morning (14 July) during a special Rise Against Hunger initiative in partnership with the Attacq Foundation at Mooirivier Mall.
This initiative forms part of the Mandela Month celebrations, where 67 minutes are dedicated to helping those in need and less fortunate. The mall’s tenants, volunteers and community members from various spheres joined in to pack 15 000 meal packets for underprivileged children. Local NPO, Love Potch, also joined in to the initiative as well as Potchefstroom Academy.
According to Mariana de Beer, admin manager and head office manager of Rise Against Hunger, the aim is to feed children in unregistered crèches.
“These meals will go to 65 children in unregistered crèches. This will feed children for a year, five days a week,” said de Beer.

The packet includes a well-balanced meal consisting of rice, soya mince, lentils and split peas, as well as a smaller packet of essential vitamins and minerals. One meal packet can feed six to eight children, depending on their age group.
“Kraft Heinz sponsors the vitamin and mineral packet which accompanies all our meals. The rice, soya mince, lentils and split peas are added to a pot. Six cups of water are added together with the vitamin packet, and it is then stirred together until cooked. Some crèches add vegetables or stock for flavour, as our meals are flavourless, without any additives or preservatives,” added de Beer.
