A former cluster commander of Potchefstroom will now take the reins as the Provincial Police Commissioner of the North West, effective from August 1 this year.

Lieutenant General Arthur Peter Adams was appointed to the position during an official event on July 30 and brings 34 years of operational and leadership experience in the SAPS. Lt. Gen. Adams also holds a National Diploma in Policing.

He served as the Deputy Provincial Commissioner responsible for Policing in the Free State from June 2026 until his appointment as the North West Provincial Police Commissioner.

“Lieutenant General Adams is widely respected for his expertise in specialised operations and his ability to lead teams in responding decisively to medium- and high-risk incidents. His extensive operational background, combined with his vast leadership and training experience, positions him well to lead the South African Police Service in the North West,” stated the SAPS.

Lt. Gen. Adams is a highly specialised operator, having qualified as a Public Order Police member, National Intervention Unit operator and trainer, and Advanced VIP Close Protection officer. He was also among the pioneering members selected to serve within the elite Counter Assault Team, one of the country’s most specialised tactical units designed to respond to medium- and high-risk operations.

Lt. Gen. Adams’ notable positions in the SAPS include:

• Cluster Commander of Potchefstroom, North West Province (2012–2016)
• District Commissioner of Bojanala Platinum District 2, Rustenburg (2016–2021)
• District Commissioner of Mangaung (2021–2026)
• Deputy Provincial Commissioner responsible for Policing in the Free State (June–July 2026)

The Acting National Commissioner of the South African Police Service, Lieutenant General Puleng Dimpane, also spoke about Lt. Gen. Adams’ extensive résumé and the skills he possesses that make him well suited to lead the SAPS in the province.

“Our responsibility was to identify a leader capable of confronting the increasingly complex policing environment facing the North West Province, while driving the organisational renewal envisaged under the SAPS Reset Agenda. We sought a leader with operational credibility, strategic foresight, proven leadership and unquestionable integrity.”

Lt. Gen. Dimpane also thanked the former Acting North West Provincial Police Commissioner, Maj. Gen. (Dr) Ryno Naidoo, for his service in the position since 2024.

“Major General Naidoo has provided stable leadership, maintained operational consistency and ensured that policing services continued without interruption. His leadership has contributed significantly to operational successes achieved across the province while maintaining discipline, professionalism and organisational stability.”
