Some people leave footprints that cannot be erased. For the Potchefstroom Central School community, the passing of Grade R teacher Mrs. Maletsema Maria Tomi has left a deep emptiness, but also countless beautiful memories of a woman who dedicated her life to children and to those around her.

Mrs. Tomi, born on April 28, 1978, passed away on August 8 at the age of 48.

To many, she was a teacher. To others, she was a mother, grandmother, friend and colleague. But to the young children she taught, she was someone who helped make their first years at school feel safe, warm and special.

For years, Mrs. Tomi devoted herself to the youngest learners at Potchefstroom Central School, where her gentle nature and genuine love for children shone through in everything she did.

Her classroom was more than a place where children learned. It was a space where little hearts could feel seen, valued and cared for.

She had a special way of making children feel comfortable and encouraged, offering patience, kindness and warmth when they needed it most.

Those who worked alongside Mrs. Tomi will remember her for much more than her dedication as an educator.

They will remember her joyful laugh.

They will remember her caring nature.

They will remember the helping hand she was always willing to offer, the comforting words she shared and the small moments of laughter that could brighten an ordinary day.

In the quiet ways that often matter the most, Mrs. Tomi touched the lives of many people.

Potchefstroom Central School carries the motto “I Serve”, and those who knew Mrs. Tomi say she embodied that spirit through the way she lived and worked every day.

Her service was not simply a responsibility. It was something she carried in her heart.

Through the many children she nurtured, taught and encouraged, a part of her will continue to live on.

Beyond the school gates, Mrs. Tomi was deeply loved by her family and friends, who are now faced with the unimaginable pain of saying goodbye.

She leaves behind memories of a woman remembered for her compassion, strength, grace and unwavering love.

“While her absence will be deeply felt at Potchefstroom Central School, her legacy will remain in the lives she touched, particularly the many young children who were fortunate enough to have experienced her kindness,” Potchefstroom Central said.

As the school and wider community mourn her passing, thoughts and prayers are with her family, friends, colleagues and all those who loved her.

Some farewells are simply too difficult to put into words.

Mrs. Tomi may be gone from sight, but she will never be forgotten.

“Her laughter, her kindness and her love for children will remain part of the Potchefstroom Central School family for years to come. Rest peacefully, Mrs. Tomi. Your service may have ended, but your legacy lives on in the hearts of those you touched,” the school said.
