9-year-old girl found dead near Sarafina Sports Ground
The discovery has left residents deeply distressed.
The Ikageng community is mourning the death of a nine-year-old girl whose body was found near the Sarafina Sports Ground on Saturday, September 19.
According to police, the young girl’s body was discovered near the sports ground on Saturday. She is estimated to have been around nine years old.
Constable Thuto Bobelo confirmed the incident but said investigations are still in their early stages.
“I can confirm that there was an incident in Ikageng where the body of a young female was found deceased near Sarafina Sports Ground, in Ikageng on Saturday. The deceased is estimated to be around nine years old,” said Bobelo.
“Investigations on the incident have commenced, and the police cannot comment further at this stage.”
Bobelo confirmed that no arrest has been made at this stage.
The circumstances surrounding the child’s death remain under investigation, and police have not provided further details.
The tragedy has sent shockwaves through Sarafina and the broader Ikageng community, with residents left grappling with the devastating loss of a child.
In response to the tragedy and wider concerns surrounding gender-based violence (GBV) and femicide, a peaceful march has been planned for Friday, September 25.
According to information circulated by Retsa Tsela, members of the community are expected to gather under the theme “Potchefstroom, arise and make your voices heard” to march against GBV and femicide in South Africa.
The march is scheduled to take place from 10:00 to 13:00, with participants expected to travel from Doubles Corners in Ikageng to the Potchefstroom High Court.
Participants have been encouraged to wear black.
Members of the public are urged not to circulate unverified information, speculation or graphic details about the child’s death, particularly given the age of the deceased.
The family’s privacy and dignity should also be respected as they come to terms with the heartbreaking loss.
