Potchefstroom joins the fight against cancer
During the annual Hollard Dare Devil Run in Potchefstroom, participants in purple Speedos ran to raise awareness for prostate and testicular cancer.
On a sunny Friday afternoon, a brave group of 68 men donned purple Speedos and took to the streets of Potchefstroom in the annual Hollard Dare Devil Run. As part of a nationwide movement that brought together approximately 7,000 participants across South Africa, the event aimed to raise awareness and funds for prostate and testicular cancer screening through the Cancer Association of South Africa (CANSA) and the Prostate Cancer Foundation of South Africa.
Starting from Cachet Park at 15:00, participants embraced the spirit of camaraderie and purpose as they ran the 5km course. The run is not just a spectacle of men in colourful attire but a vital initiative that highlights the importance of early detection and screening for prostate and testicular cancers, especially in under-resourced areas.
Marna Naude, one of the event organizers in Potchefstroom, expressed her enthusiasm for this year’s turnout. “We had a fantastic response this year with 68 runners. Our goal is to double that number next year! It’s incredible to see the community come together for such an important cause,” she said.
The Dare Devil Run has been a staple on the South African calendar for 15 years, and each year, participation has grown. The event has not only become a platform for raising funds but also a space for men to share their experiences and encourage one another to prioritize their health.
The funds raised through the Dare Devil Run are earmarked for testing initiatives in under-resourced communities and to support ongoing research into prostate and testicular cancer. The involvement of local businesses and sponsors has been crucial in ensuring the event’s success and reach. Corporates across the country have stepped up, helping to create an environment where conversations about health are encouraged and normalized.
Hendrik, Marna’s husband and co-organizer, added, “This year was particularly special because we took on the responsibility of organizing the event for the first time. We are committed to ensuring that the next events are even better, with more participants and support.”
Feedback from participants highlighted the positive atmosphere of the event. “This was my first time running the Dare Devil, and I loved every minute of it! It’s amazing to see so many men getting involved for such an important cause,” said one enthusiastic runner after completing the race.
With a vision to expand participation, the organizers have plans to engage more local schools, sports clubs, and communities in the future. “We want to make this a cornerstone of our community’s annual calendar,” Marna stated. “The more people we can get involved, the better we can promote awareness about cancer screening and health responsibility among men.”
The energy at Cachet Park radiated hope and determination, marking Potchefstroom’s contribution to a nationwide phenomenon aimed at changing lives and saving lives.
With plans already in motion for next year’s event, the hope is to build on the success of this year, encouraging more men to shed their inhibitions and join the fight against cancer. “Let’s make next year’s run even bigger and better,” Hendrik urged. “Together, we can make a real difference.”
