948 suspects arrested in North West Province during Operation Shanela, with arrests for serious crimes including murder, rape, and illicit mining.
Operation Shanela, a concerted effort by the police and various law enforcement agencies in the North West Province, has resulted in the arrest of 948 suspects for a range of criminal activities. The operation, which took place from Monday, 18 – 24 November 2024, has yielded significant success in tackling crime across the province.
The arrested individuals face charges ranging from illicit mining, rape, murder, assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm (GBH), malicious damage to property, burglary, drug possession, theft from motor vehicles, to driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs. A significant number of the suspects, 439 in total, were apprehended for serious contact crimes including murder, attempted murder, rape, assault, illicit mining, and robbery. Additionally, 259 suspects were arrested during targeted raids by detectives. Furthermore, 64 individuals, suspected to be undocumented, were also detained for processing.
The arrests were carried out as part of a series of well-coordinated operations, including stop-and-searches, roadblocks, vehicle checkpoints, and the inspection of licensed liquor outlets and second-hand goods dealers. In addition to the arrests, the operations led to the confiscation of a wide array of illicit items. These included various drugs, dangerous weapons, counterfeit goods, nine cell phones, illegal cigarettes, 29 rounds of ammunition, four firearms, copper cable, liquor, and four stolen vehicles.
One of the key highlights of the operation was the closure of 14 illegal liquor outlets, also known as shebeens, as part of efforts to curb unlawful alcohol sales and related criminal activities.
Lieutenant General Sello Kwena, Provincial Police Commissioner, commended the hard work of the police and other law enforcement partners for their unwavering dedication to ensuring the safety and security of the province’s residents. He also thanked the public for their ongoing support in the fight against crime.
