Potchefstroom residents warned of rotational power interruptions

Municipal spokesperson Jeanette Tshite said the municipality has no choice but to implement rotational power interruptions while repairs are underway.

Residents across Potchefstroom and surrounding areas have been warned to prepare for rotational load curtailment after one of the transformers at the Potch DS Substation began experiencing severe overheating issues from Thursday, 7 May.

According to a statement issued by the JB Marks Local Municipality on Friday May 8, the overheating transformer has been repeatedly tripping, placing strain on the electricity network and raising concerns about possible damage to the equipment.

Municipal spokesperson Jeanette Tshite said the municipality has no choice but to implement rotational power interruptions while repairs are underway.

“One of the transformers currently in operation at the Potch DS Substation is experiencing severe overheating. As a result, the transformer is repeatedly tripping. To prevent further interruptions and protect the equipment from damage, it is necessary to reduce the load on the transformer,” Tshite explained.

The Potch DS is an Eskom substation that supplies electricity to the greater Potchefstroom area through multiple substations, meaning the problem could affect several neighbourhoods across the city.

Tshite added that Eskom has already received the required spare parts needed to repair the second transformer.

“The second transformer is expected to be back online by early next week. Once operational, it will help stabilise the power supply and restore normal operations,” she said.

In the meantime, JB Marks Local Municipality will continue switching off affected areas on a rotational basis to reduce pressure on the network. Tshite said if the transformer temperature drops significantly during the process, electricity supply to all affected areas will immediately be restored.

Residents are encouraged to use electricity sparingly during this period as efforts continue to stabilise the power supply.

Load curtailment schedule and substations to be switched off:

16:00 – 19:00

Alpha substation – areas affecting: Industrial and Suiddorp.

Beta substation – Promosa, Mohadin, Vuselela College and surrounding areas, Mc Arthur Stadium and CBD.

19:00 – 22:00

Ikageng main substation – Ikageng Extension.
