Eagle Eye: Leading with vision and precision

Eagle Eye is editorial mouthpiece of the Herald - this will be a weekly print exclusive. The first piece appeared in the 8 January edition of Potchefstroom Herald.

I have always been fascinated with eagles and falcons for various reasons.
Eagles’ majestic wingspan, their vision and their ability to soar to great heights are just some of their impressive traits.
In the same breath, falcons exhibit the same awe and wonder, but for factors such as speed and precision.

Both predatory birds have a keen eye for detail, seeing the world from a different viewpoint, not settling for the mundane and leading from the front.

Eagles are strong-willed and won’t back down from challenges.
Falcons take decisive action and keep focus.
It is all these characteristics that intertwine perfectly with my role as editor of the Potchefstroom Herald and my editorial team.

Editors and journalists need to keep an eye in every direction, mostly from a bird’s eye view, to see all possible perspectives to tell the full story accurately and fairly.

We have to be quick when compiling stories to meet deadlines and be decisive during pressure moments.
As an editor, my goal for 2026 is to stay focused and lead with vision in order to serve the Potchefstroom community with the best stories.

Stories that people relate to, narratives that tug on the heartstrings, accounts that entertain and articles that inform.

Let us all step into 2026 with vision and purpose – we may just end the year soaring towards greater heights.

* The Potchefstroom Herald Eagle Eye will also be available in Afrikaans as Valkoog. This is a weekly editorial comment that will be published as a weekly print exclusive.
