Sigi Burger’s shooting prowess helped NWU Pukke to an easy 65-32 win over the Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University (NMMU) at the SANDF Kopanelo Hall tonight.
Not only did Pukke get a convincing win but also booked their place in the semifinals where they will face either the seemingly unstoppable Kovsies next week Monday.
Pukke will now need to take as many positives as possible from this game against NMMU, such as Burger ‘s good form in front of goal which has lead her to two consecutive players of the match awards.
The scoreline flatters Pukke as NMMU produced most of their quality netball in the first quarter. At one stage the ladies from Port Elizabeth were level on 8-8 with their quick and swift approach proved tough for Pukke to keep up with.
It did not last long as NMMU lost their momentum after some great defence from Zandre Kruger and Maronel Scherman respectively and smart passing from Lentsa Motau to get Pukke rolling again.
NWU Pukke captain Izanna Muller had a good game as she also lead by example for most of the match.
At half time Pukke secured a commanding 29-14 lead and kept the momentum going for the rest of the match as they never let their foot slip off the pedal.
Burger kept on piling on the point as her lean and lanky framed made it difficult for NMMU’s defenders to keep her at bay.
The last quarter was a routine end to the match as the crowd cheered when the final whistle sounded for a resounding victory.
NWU Pukke campus rector, Mr. Herman van Schalkwyk, was also present at the event and congratulated Pukke on their win and gave well wishes to the team for the semi-final stage.
