Commentary box: Sports writers are talent scouts

The first time I could call myself a proper Premier Soccer League (PSL) writer was during 2014 when I received my first PSL media accreditation.
Before then I dabbled in blogging about local football and watched countless matches on TV. But now with this media pass I was ready to write for an actual publication. I was ready for action.
The first team I covered was the now defunct Mpumalanga Black Aces. The Amazayoni (also known as the Zionists). This team was then under the coaching and tutorship of coaching legend Clive Barker.
Much was expected of this team, who now sadly are no more with their relocation to Cape Town as Cape Town All Stars.
I remember seeing the likes of Lehlohonolo Nonyane, Collins Mbesuma and the exciting Tendai Ndoro in action at the Mbombela Stadium. Ndoro is now one of the hottest strikers in the PSL with Orlando Pirates and I spotted his promise there and then in the blue kit of Aces.

I had the opportunity to write about Ndoro, put him in the spotlight, uplift his talents through my writing and make him a better knowncommodity.
The same can be said when I covered Jomo Cosmos last season in Potchefstroom. Cheslyn Jampies was one of the team’s stars and I was one of the lucky ones who got to spot his talent before he made it all the way into the Bafana Bafana sqaud. It is fantastic to see the players you get to witness week in and week out could become international stars in a few years.

As media and sport writers we can identify talent through our writing and bring players to public attention. We need to create heroes for our sporting mad youngsters.
Every year another Jampies and Ndoro can make it through the ranks and we see their potential first hand.
We are privileged to uplift local football through our ink on paper and our fingers on the keyboards.
Let’s keep scouting. Let’s keep taking photos and and let’s keep writing players into the record books.
