The Buildnat Cape Cobras had too much venom for the bizhub Highveld Lions tonight at Senwes Park as they overpowered the home side with a resounding six wicket win in the Momentum One Day Cup.

The Lions were never in the contest as the Cape Cobras paved their road to victory with a superb all round bowling performance. Dane Paterson was the pick of the bowlers with his 4/32.

The Cobras batsmen also made light work in chasing down the Lions’ 188 all out, posting 189/4 as Richard Levi hit a smashing 85 (60) and veteran Andrew Puttick contributing 57* to send their team to a much deserved win.

It was retribution for the Cobras after they lost the previous encounter with the Lions by three wickets at Boland Park in Paarl, the previous week.

The Lions made a stuttering start to their innings after choosing to bat first and went into free fall early on after losing the wicket of Rassie van der Dussen for 6. Zakhele Qwabe also impressed with his line and length as he got rid of Reeza Hendricks, Dominic Hendricks and Nicky van den Bergh in quick succession.

The Lions never recovered and found themselves in a sorry state at 93/7 at one stage. Nono Pongolo (47) and Wiaan Mulder (24) though repaired the damage with a 69 run partnership. Aaron Phangiso also hit some lusty blows at the end to help the Lions to a somewhat defendable score.

The Cobras though started their chase guns blazing and never looked back as Levi and Puttick combined for a mammoth 125 run partnership that blew the Lions out of the water.

In the end, the Cobras strolled home to an easy victory with 105 balls remaining as Aviwe Mgijima hit the winning runs with a towering six.
