With the odds stacked against them, Technical High School Potchefstroom’s first team managed to regain the FNB Classic Clash trophy with a 28-7 victory against Potchefstroom Boys High today (Saturday, 19 May)

After Boys High had dominated the day on the enemy’s turf with big wins in the earlier matches, it was expected that this pattern would continue in the main event of the Classic Clash.

The men from THS though had other plans as their tenacity on attack and defence combined with their hunger for victory, gave them the edge. Locks, Lwazi Gumedze and Tim Salusalu were monumental with captain, Ntlantla Myeko leading by example.

THS took a 8-0 lead at half-time with Olebogeng Mosiane pulling the strings from the number 10 position. Mosiane had a fantastic match and his running with the ball gave Boys High a couple of headaches. Further second half tries from the sniping scrum half Matthew Miller, inside centre, Gomolemo Manyeneng, fullback Orateng Lekoake and substitute, Leon Pheto, guaranteed a victory in a one-sided second half.

The only joy for Boys High was Vuyo Sindwa’s try down the right hand touch line after a good few phases of play in the second half. Boys High in retrospect, did not have enough possession and territory and when they had the ball in their hands, critical handling errors denied them control of proceedings.

This was a special win for THS especially as this was their principal, Chris de Villiers’, final Classic Clash, after 25 years of historic rugby meetings.
