Potchefstroom’s mountain bikers were once again at the forefront in the recent Magalies Monster MTB Classic that took place at ATKV Buffelspoort on Saturday, 2 June.
Danielle Strydom continued her impressive year with a brilliant first place in the 70 km women’s category in a time of 03:44:42.
Pieter du Toit also impressed in the men’s 70 km race with a sixth-place finish (03:15:36). The brother and sister duo, Brendan and Joné van Eeden also impressed with podium finishes.
Brendan took second in the 35 km race in a time of 01:31:39, just behind Keagan Bontekoning who took first (01:30:04.)
Joné went one better than her brother and took first in the women’s 35-kilometre race in a time of 01:58:20.
Strydom was in a class of her own in the women’s race and, although she was exhausted afterwards, she could bask in another brilliant performance.
‘This is the first year that I am riding under-23 and am old enough to take part in the full FNB Magalies Monster (70 km),’ said Strydom. ‘I think I might have left my legs up on the Monster. My plan was just to see how it goes and then take it from there. I really enjoyed the race. Crossing the finish line first is an amazing experience. It definitely makes up for all the climbs.’
