The utterly destructive batting of Dragons’ left-hander, Wihan Lubbe, was on full display at the recent 2018 Africa T20 Cup.
He hit the fastest T20 century by a South African.
Lubbe smeared the ball to all parts in his knock of 102 from 33 balls (5 fours and 11 sixes) against a hapless Limpopo bowling attack in Paarl during a group stage encounter on 15 September.
Lubbe’s debut T20 century was not only the fastest T20 century on SA soil but it was also the third fastest in international cricket history.
Only India’s Rishabh Pant (32 balls) and West Indies’ Chris Gayle (30 balls) have bested the Dragons’ batsman.
‘It was a really enjoyable innings and, in the moment, you don’t realise how fast you are batting. What helped me to play an attacking game was the solid foundation that our openers, Jonty Rapulana and Shane Dadswell laid in that game,’ he stated humbly.
According to Lubbe, most of the shots he and Nicky van den Bergh tried to execute came off a day where everything fell into place.
‘It was a great experience and what made it even more special was that our score of 262/4 was the third-highest in T20 history,’ said Lubbe, praising the team effort on the day.

The Dragons lost the semi-final of the Africa T20 Cup to Gauteng by 27 runs on Sunday, 23 September and were unlucky to miss out on the final.
According to Lubbe, the team did not perform at their best during the defeat, even though they put in a couple of good performances during the match.
‘Jonty played a great knock of 85 but we just could not chase down the target after Temba (Bavuma) and Wiaan (Mulder) both scored 50s. They are both Protea players and they took their chances.’
