NWU flattered to deceive at the 2019 Varsity 7s tournament at the Pirates Rugby Club in Greenside last weekend. They had to settle for the spoils in the bowl final.

The NWU had a couple of bright spots during the weekend, with Caleb Louw and Lungelo Gosa strutting their stuff. But, overall, they saw their cup hopes dashed with a defeat to Maties in the Cup quarter-final.

Captain Wessel Kuhn, led from the front with his bursting runs, while the skilled Sylvester Hassien and Joao Cristovam also showcased their silky feet on the attack.

In the end, UJ were the deserving winners of the title after beating Maties by 20–0 in the final.
