The tables look to be turning in the right direction for Potchefstroom’s talented winger and newest Jomo Cosmos signee, Lefa Lebalelo.
Just two years previously, Lefa had the opportunity to join Cosmos. However, owing to various circumstances, he could not be signed by the former Premier Soccer League giants.
Lefa currently plays in the National First Division (Glad Africa Championship) for Cosmos and has already impressed with his smooth running and intelligent play on the wing.
“It is a great feeling to be a part of such a professional team like Cosmos. I always wanted to play for this club.”
“I was supposed to join the club in 2018. As the years went by, I thought my opportunity had passed. So, now I am even more grateful to be playing at a high level at last. Everything about me is football,” he says.
Lefa’s football journey started like any youngster’s in South Africa, playing football on the street at the age of six. For Lefa, football has never been just a game but a lifestyle.
“From a young age, I knew I wanted to play football for a living, so I kept pursuing it. I started playing for Potch Academy in 2016, Matlosana FC in 2017 and Polokwane City Rovers in the ABC League until signing for Cosmos,” said the former Potch Primary, Die Wilge and Boitshobelo learner.
One aspect that has always been a constant in Lefa’s life is the support he has had from his coach and especially his mother.
“A lot of footballer’s mothers do not always encourage football as a career. My mom has always supported me from the start, though, and I cannot thank her enough. Another big roleplayer in my development as a player is Mr Papi Lekopa. I am truly grateful to both of them,” he states.
Lefa story has been filled with a good dose of jubilation and dis- appointment and has proved that anyone can make it to the top if talent and hard work melt into one.
“From a young age, you should have discipline on the field and train hard. You also need to respect your elders and coaches,” mentions Lefa, who made his debut against Maritzburg United in Potch this year.
Another advantage for Lefa is that he can pick the brain of the SA football legend, Jomo Sono, who has been the coach of his team since its inception.
“Jomo Sono is the master of football in South Africa and his training and knowledge have given me a big advantage. It is a privilege,” says Lefa of his coach.
