History for Mohadin Primary’s Happy

History was made in March when Happy Chizombo (13) became the first athlete in the history of Mohadin Primary School to qualify for the SA Schools Athletics Championships.

Sadly, Happy now has to wait to realise his dream of competing in these championships due to the current Covid-19 regulations.

He can still be immensely proud of his programme through the various levels. At the provincial athletics meeting at the NWU McArthur-stadium, he achieved a new record in the boys’ u.13 long jump with a first place. He also achieved gold in the boys’ u.13 relay and a third place in the 100 m dash.

“I am very happy. Everyone at the stadium was cheering me and I realised it is possible; the moment for me had really come. I knew that I was progressing to the next level,” said Happy.

Hard work is one of the most important qualities that has taken this history-making athlete to the top of the podium.

According to Mohadin Primary principal, Thabo Lekalakala, Happy started athletics in earnest this year. He progressed from cluster schools to sub-district, district and, finally, the provincial representation. This makes his achievement all the more astounding.

Happy cites the world-famous Jamaican sprinting sensation, Usain Bolt, as his biggest motivation alongside his principal, Thabo Lekalakala, Mr Cassim and other beloved teachers at the school.

Happy’s dream is to one day compete in athletics in America.
