A group of football-loving students (The Union of Cachet Park Football Association) participated in an exciting six-a-side football tournament on Cachet Park on Friday, 14 May.

The idea for this community sporting initiative started in 2020 during the Covid-19 pandemic when a Potch resident, Hestie Botha, saw students playing football in Cachet Park. According to Botha, she encouraged them to play football and keep the park clean at the same time.

The ensuing cooperation resulted in the staging of this second tournament. “It’s wonderful to see 48 players on the field enjoying the day. We also had numerous prizes like special 2010 FIFA World Cup jerseys that Steve van Vuuren donated,” stated Botha.

In 2020, the first seeds were planted with the first tournament taking place. In 2021, the second one was an even bigger success. A fourth-year BSc pharmacy student at the NWU, Terence Munyai, collaborated with Botha in staging the tournament.

Munyai added that the tournament was a great way to showcase the talent on campus. It was also an opportunity for players to get to know one another a bit better. “It’s a great tournament and we really enjoyed participating,” he said. Johan Naudé, the Cachet Park City Improvement District manager, sponsored the water for the players. This tournament was also a testament to the revitalisation of Cachet Park under the CID. It will undoubtedly act as a springboard for the tournament to grow in leaps and bounds in the future.
