In his first year as a North West Dragons player, all-rounder, Senuran Muthusamy (28) took home the NW Dragons Player of the Year and Bowler of the Year awards for the 2021/22 season.
Muthusamy was one of the stars drafted into the team for their inaugural season in division 1 and he repaid the faith that management had in him with some fine all-round displays.
In a topsy-turvy season, Muthusamy kept things together when needed most with bat or ball – depending on the situation. The man who puts his team first and delivers when you need him most.
“It is a real honour to be awarded at an individual level. We played good cricket especially in the white ball format last season and I am happy to have been able to contribute overall,” stated Muthusamy.
“Sen” as he is known by his team-mates, was the proverbial trump card on numerous occasions. His standout performance with the willow was a superbly crafted first A-list century (100) against Western Province in Potch at the J.B. Marks Oval. His team were in a spot of bother, but Sen dug it out and his knock sent his team to victory.
“That was a special innings to me and it made it even better that it helped the team to win,” adds Muthusamy.
He averaged 40 in the One Day Cup and 33 in the 4-Day Cup and 36 in the CSA Provincial T20.
He also starred in a loss against Western Province in the 4Day Cup at Newlands with a century (101) and half century in the same match.

The former Protea test player was also impressive with his economical and accurate left-arm spin bowling. He picked up 10 wickets in the CSA T20 challenge with an impressive economy rate of 4.30 and average of 9.90. Miserly in today’s T20 standards.
He also picked up a further 6 wickets in the Provincial T20 as well as 12 wickets in the 4 Day format.
Muthusamy states that he moved from the Dolphins to the Dragons to take on a new challenge in a new climate and atmosphere.
“I took the opportunity to test myself in a new team. I had to learn a new environment having been playing at the Dolphins for my whole career. The conditions were definitely different,” adds Muthusamy.
One of NW Dragons new recruits for the 2022/23 season is Dolphins pacer, Kerwin Mungroo. Muthusamy is of the opinion that his former teammate at the Dolphins will be an important addition to the Dragons setup.
“Kerwin has great experience in the white ball format. He is funny and relaxed guy and good to have in the team. He has also been part of successful teams and know how to win,” says Muthusamy.
Muthusamy himself brings a calmness to the squad and is a reliable cricketer who can bring experience to the younger guys in the squad.
“This season I would really want to help the Dragons win at least one trophy. That is the goal. Whether I am bowling or batting, I will do whatever the team needs me to do.”
