The Cosatu union protested Friday, October 6, against a number of issues they find concerning. According to the Provincial chairperson Southern African Customs Union (SACU), Smuts Matshe, Cosatu has organised pickets across the county to fight for the rights of employees. “ As we celebrate the international day for decent work, we are here to fight for the lack of services, lack of decent pay and overall corruption faced by employees,” he explained.
Matshe says a memorandum has been handed over to the North West Premier, Bushy Maape and they have asked to receive a response after 14 working days.
Before the strike took place, the acting municipal manager, Sandile Tyatya had warned employees that in order to take part in the march officials must apply for leave otherwise the policy which will be followed will be “no work no pay“. “It is important to emphasise the collective agreement which does not provide for essential workers to go on a strike,” he said.
