The importance of further education for Grade 12 learners

As Grade 12 students near the end of high school, the transition to tertiary education presents both opportunities and challenges.

As Grade 12 students approach the end of their high school journey, the decision to pursue further education becomes a pressing consideration. For many, the transition to tertiary studies is both an exciting opportunity and a daunting challenge. Understanding the significance of further education and the resources available to support it can help ease this transition and set students on a path to success.

“Education is more than just learning facts; it’s about expanding your horizons and opening doors to new opportunities,” says Bevan Wright, a final-year LLB law student. Wright emphasizes the critical role of consistency, positive attitude, and organizational skills in succeeding in higher education. “Consistency in your work ethic is crucial. Building on what you’ve already learned and maintaining a productive attitude can make a significant difference in your academic journey.”

Zanda Eulander Langa, a third-year student pursuing a Bachelor of Health Science with Recreation Science and Tourism Management, echoes this sentiment. “I decided to pursue higher education not only to advance my career but also to give back to the community that supported me,” she explains. Langa’s experience highlights how education can serve as a tool for both personal development and community impact.

However, one of the major hurdles students face is the financial burden associated with higher education. Many are concerned about the costs of tuition and other expenses. “Financial challenges are a real concern for many students,” acknowledges Teacher Lesley-Ann Pauls, who pursued part-time studies while working before finally enrolling at the University of Potchefstroom. “I took a chance and applied for a bursary, which was crucial in helping me achieve my dream of becoming an educator.”

Teacher Pauls’s story illustrates that financial aid can make a significant difference. Bursaries and scholarships are designed to assist students in overcoming financial barriers, allowing them to focus on their studies without the added stress of economic constraints. “Education is something that no one can take from you,” Pauls adds. “It’s an investment in your future, and there are resources available to help make it accessible.”

Balancing the demands of academic life with personal responsibilities can be challenging. Wright advises students to develop a routine that includes dedicated study periods along with time for relaxation and extracurricular activities. “Effective time management is key. You need to find a balance that works for you and helps prevent burnout,” he says.

As students prepare to graduate, exploring the available bursaries and scholarships can significantly ease the financial burden of higher education. “Don’t let financial challenges deter you from pursuing your goals,” Pauls urges. “Seek out the opportunities available to you, and take advantage of the resources that can help you succeed.”
