Traffic calming measures needed

Traffic count needs to be done before traffic calming measures can be installed on 2nd Avenue.

Traffic calming measures are needed on a dangerous road in Linden.

Resident Paul Tuson complained that 2nd Avenue was turning into an arterial road when it was supposed to be a small suburban road.

“This road cannot handle the amount of traffic that is currently on it,” he said. “There have been five serious accidents at the intersections of 2nd Avenue and 13th Street, and on the corner of 2nd and Road No 3 in the past two months.”

His main concern was that there were three schools, a university and a church on this road.

“This means that lots of children, elderly people and residents are in danger because of these dangerous intersections that have no traffic calming measures.”

Ward 117 councillor Tim Truluck said, “It takes about five years for road calming measures like speed bumps to be installed. In the meantime I suggested to the residents that they can send queries to the Johannesburg Roads Agency to fix small problems like repainting faded road markings.” He added that a meeting was held with the roads agency, but it first had to send out a team to count traffic during peak hours to determine whether traffic calming measures were necessary.
