After being dropped heavily in the third round, North Riding-based boxer Kaine ‘K9’ Fourie had to dig deep to come back against the dangerous Ghanaian fighter Mohammed Wasiru.

K9 ended the 10-bout Boxing 5’s ‘Unrivalled’ main event in round 5 as he caught Wasiru with a left punch that sent him face down on the floor.

From the opening second of the fight, the unbeaten Wasiru, with 12 KOs going in, charged at Fourie going for blood with mean intent and looking for an early KO.

The real drama unfolded in the second round when the Ghanaian applied pressure in the last 10 seconds. He threw a looping right hand that caught Fourie, causing him to fall into the ropes as the bell rang to end the round. He then threw another right hand that dropped Fourie after the bell and the referee started counting.

“My mind was all over the place after he knocked me down for the first time in my life,” said K9. “Everything started playing in the back of my head and at that moment I knew it was time to dig deep and come back even stronger after that knockdown.”

Going into the fourth round, K9 was more alert and caught Wasiru with a counter left hook that dropped him. K9, smelling blood, unleashed his vaunted 45-degree left hook, which dropped Wasiru hard, face first, prompting the referee to wave off the contest without bothering to count.

K9 said this knockout felt the best of them all, especially against the hard-hitting Ghanaian KO king.

“He is a good boxer in his way. I don’t have much to say about him, and his team left everything in the ring. I did my job to be the first person to make him touch the canvas. I’m glad I did get the victory on the night but it could’ve been much better executed and delivered. But we made sure to get the win.”

He added he knew the Ghanaian was getting tired, so he just had to survive a few more minutes, wear him out and start landing his combos.

“I knew once I landed it would be over and so it happened when I caught him with my left hook. I needed to win this fight to be one step closer to helping my parents retire and make a living out of this boxing career. The only person standing in front of me was the hard-hitting Ghanian, so with all that fire in me I made sure I dug deep like a dog and fired on all cylinders.”
