Community spirit sparks new life for Randburg Civic Centre

A wave of community pride is transforming the Randburg Civic Centre with residents leading the way by cleaning up the landmark.

The Randburg Civic Centre is coming back to life. Thanks to a passionate group of residents, local organisations, and businesses, the long-awaited restoration of the Civic Centre is underway.

Led by Ward 102 Councillor Lucinda Harman and the Reimagine Randburg campaign, this effort proves that when a community pulls together, they can truly make a difference.

Councillor Harman shared her heartfelt thanks, “It’s inspiring to see how much our community cares. We came out today to paint, clean, and prepare the Civic Centre for its grand reopening next Monday. I want to thank the Moths for their support, the residents who showed up with their time and energy, and the local businesses. Dulux donated the paint, and others contributed materials and food. This isn’t about city officials doing all the work, it’s about residents taking pride in their city and making it better.”

The Civic Centre has been vacant for two years since a fire displaced the Region B Customer Service Centre at 38 Harley Street. Now, with a phased plan, the community is turning the space around.

Today’s work focused on clearing rubbish from the Garden of Remembrance, a memorial dedicated to police officers who fell in service. Groups like the Memorable Order of Tin Hats and San Sereno Retirement Village rolled up their sleeves, helping to tidy the grounds and provide refreshments for the volunteers.

“It’s amazing what we’ve achieved in just one day,” said Councillor Harman. “Despite asking for help from the city, it’s the residents who’ve stepped up by painting, cleaning, and showing their pride.”

Looking ahead, the plan is to continue restoring the building in stages. This includes fixing up the fountain, pruning the gardens, and repainting the memorial columns that honour those who served and sacrificed. The main focus now is on making the building safe and secure, especially since vandalism has been a serious problem, electrical cables have been stolen, and damage inside the building has been a setback. The community knows that long-term success will require additional support and partnerships.

“Our hope is to find a big sponsor or partner who can help us fully refurbish the Civic Centre,” Councillor Harman explained. “This isn’t just about painting walls, it’s about restoring a symbol of our community’s resilience and pride.”

As the reopening day approaches, today’s efforts remind us that real change begins with community action. Randburg is showing that when residents come together, they can reimagine and rebuild what makes their town special.
