Boksruin Community Centre faces a spike in crime

Ward 134 councillor Devon Steenkamp urges residents to sign the petition to help slow down the crime at the Boksruin Community Centre.

Ward 134 councillor Devon Steenkamp is concerned about the rise of crime at the Boksruin Community Centre.

Steenkamp explained that the community members have been informing him of cars being stolen at the centre, as well as muggings taking place in the neighbourhood.

“This is a real concern. I have a petition going around to try and highlight this issue, that the South African Police Services (SAPS) needs to do more oversight, and try to curb those statistics that we are experiencing.

Also, I’m compelling the city to ask them what their plans are to try and help prevent crime that’s taking place at the centre.”

He added that three years ago, there was a guardhouse at the entrance, but because the city didn’t maintain it, it became unsafe and unhygienic. “So, they removed it. Now, there are boom gates, but they just stand like statues, not functional.

They could assist, and be a preventative of crime, just to deter criminals. It may not stop crime, but it could help reduce it.”

The ward councillor confirmed that he asked the MMC of Economic Development about their plans, and when they can reinstall the guardhouse.

“I follow up with the security assigned at the centre, to find out what they are doing to prevent the crime.

Criminals take advantage of poor security and lack of visible policing.” He urged residents to look out for and sign the petition.

“Add your voice and share it with groups, so that when I go to the council, I can raise these issues. We need to slow down the crime that’s taking place. We don’t want crime in this ward.”
