The young martial artist explained that she enjoyed the tournament and met people she would not have, under other circumstances.
“I did kata with some and fought against others. I got my butt handed to me, but at least I got to showcase my experience. I was good enough, and made it into the team due to my fighting ability. I enjoyed the fact that I got to do the thing I most enjoy, with the people I most enjoy. It was amazing to say the least.”
She battled against the top seed in her age group in Gauteng, managing to last the full match, despite getting hurt. “I may not have won, but I achieved third place in the championship, and was accepted into the Gauteng Karate Federation team. So, now I am heading to Karate South Africa (KSA) National Championships.”

Dominique said, the fact that she got into the Gauteng Karate Federation team is a very big step in her karate career. She is now focusing on the KSA National Championships in two weeks.

“I’m going to Mpumalanga to compete. My goal is to represent South Africa in international karate competitions. I feel proud of myself for achieving third place, and being accepted into the Gauteng team, but I am also very proud of myself for lasting a full round with the best karate fighter in my age group.”
She finished the fight, despite getting a heel kick to the head early on, finishing with a concussion. She said that she wanted to prove, not only to herself, but also to her dojo, family, and friends, how good she is.
“I bit down hard on my gum guard and endured the pain and double vision for the remainder of the fight. I tried to stay focused. I was positive, and tried the best I could. I may have ended up in hospital after my fight that evening, but I tried my best. I made it in, and I had fun, and that’s all that matters.”
Nikki Belt, Dominique’s mother, explained that her heart is overflowing with pride, emotion, and gratitude.
“This is a journey that started 11 years ago and has led to this incredible moment. I have never been prouder in my life. I have watched my daughter pour her heart, sweat, and soul into this dream, pushing through every challenge with grit and determination. To see her stand on that podium, knowing the sacrifices, the tears, the relentless effort, it is a moment I will cherish forever.”
She added that this is more than a competition, but a dream realised, a testament to perseverance, and a moment that will live in her heart forever.
