NPC launches support system for Neurofibromatosis teen and family

A 15-year-old living with Neurofibromatosis has completed the first phase of surgery, with the Mogale City Business Committee NPC continuing to support him and his family.

The Mogale City Business Committee NPC has detailed the support provided to 15-year-old Mahlatse Marema, who is recovering from surgery to relieve symptoms caused by Neurofibromatosis.

Mahlatse has lived with the disease his entire life. When tumours on his face began affecting his sight and hearing, the organisation stepped in to help secure a free surgery to remove them. He has since completed the first phase of the procedure.

Chairperson Gideon Phiri explained that the organisation’s latest support report outlines the assistance offered to the Marema family this week.

In addition to emotional and logistical support, the NPC arranged transportation to the hospital on November 3.

Upon arrival, the family received help with registration before Mahlatse underwent pre-operative assessments, which included height and weight measurements in preparation for surgery.

The operation, performed by six medical specialists, lasted between five and six hours and focused on the left side of Mahlatse’s face. As part of the procedure, his ear had to be removed. The second phase of surgery, which will address the lower chin area, is scheduled for January.

Gideon added that the organisation’s Asset Maintenance Department, in partnership with the Mogale City Business Committee NPC, ensured the family received transport, meals and refreshments.

Mahlatse was discharged on November 4, and the family expressed their heartfelt gratitude for the support they received. A follow-up appointment is scheduled for tomorrow.

Further updates on Mahlatse’s recovery will be shared as his journey continues.
